Our Trip to Durham!

Testing corn from the field to see if the desired protein is present in the corn.

Our Trip to Durham!

Performing Gel Electrophoresis to determine if the gene is present in the embryos.

Our Trip to Durham!

Harvesting corn embryos. These embryos were mixed with a bacteria that will insert the CRY3 gene into the embryos. This gene makes a protein that will target and kill corn rootworm beetles.

Our Trip to Durham!

Learning the processes of making ethanol to be used as fuel from corn.

Biomes

In Chapter 52 of your text book it summarizes eight aquatic and eight terrestrial biomes. For this assignment I want you to give me a summary of the different biomes. Since there are 16 biomes and 16 students, each student should have their own biome to research. You cannot have a biome done by more than one student. Also, take time to read through what other students see about their biome as a quick review. This post is due Thursday, March 17th.

AP Biology Discussion 2

Chapter 52 - Abiotic Factors

In regular Biology you learned the difference between biotic and abiotic factors. Biotic are living factors and abiotic are non-living factors. In Chapter 52 page 1154, the book explains the most common types of abiotic factors. They are Temperature, Water, Salinity, Sunlight, and Rocks and Soil. For your discussion, I want you to pick one of these abiotic factors and explain its importance to the environment. No more than 4 posts on a specific one. Also, take time to read what your classmates find out about a different one from yours. This assignment is due Tuesday, March 8th.

AP Biology Protein Lab

My AP Biology students took their knowledge of proteins, and the properties of their amino acids to create a 3D model of what their protein would actually look like. Some of the factors that they had to follow was the hydrophobic natures(will not mix with water), hydrophilic natures(will mix with water), and ionic charges of amino acids. These three models make up a tertiary protein structure. When they put the three together in the first picture, they had an example of a quartinary structure of the protein. Great Lab!
